Building Your Credit with a Credit Card

Building your credit with a credit card is a fairly simple process, you just have follow some basic rules. Having good credit is important, especially when looking to get a loan or take out a mortgage or use any kind of advanced credit card processing. Building your credit with a credit card will not only make it easier to require a loan or mortgage, but good credit will allow you to get a better interest rate as well and save you money. A credit card is a great way to build up your credit as long as it is used responsibly. Here are some tips on building your credit with a credit card.
The first step in building your credit with a credit card is making sure your credit card is paid off in full each month. The best way to do this is to be frugal with your credit card use and only use credit card processing when you really need it. A good rule of thumb is to never use your credit card to buy something you couldn’t pay for with cash. Also make sure that you maintain a reasonable amount of cash for the end of each month when you must pay off your credit card bill. The reason it is good to pay off your credit card bill each month is twofold. First, paying off your credit card bill in full each month shows that you are responsible with your money and are a low risk to lend money to from a merchant account. This helps out your credit score tremendously. Secondly, credit cards have interest rates themselves. If you don’t pay off your credit card at the end of each month, that interest rate can build up and cost you a great deal of money.

The next step in building your credit with a credit card is making sure you have a reasonable credit limit. Mainly, this helps with the first step. If you have a lower credit limit on your credit card, it is easier to pay off your entire bill at the end of each month. A higher credit limit can tempt you to overextend your finances and make purchases that you really can’t afford. Going for long periods of time without paying off your credit card bill can be detrimental to your credit score. Some people are wary of getting a lower credit limit on their credit card because it is easier to max that card out on one of their visits to a credit card billing store. This should not be the case, as you should be tracking your money expenditure carefully when you are building your credit with a credit card to avoid maxing your card out. Even if you do accidentally max your credit card out, it is not disastrous to your credit score. Simply make sure you pay off the balance on the credit card as soon as you can. It is when you delay paying off a credit card bill that your credit score is adversely affected.

When building your credit with a credit card, it really comes down to responsibility. You must prove your responsibility to finance companies who can loan you money when paying with a credit card. As long as you keep track of your purchases and are responsible with your finances you should have no problem building your credit with a credit card.
